Volunteering for a Happy Retirement!
...fishing, travelling, or sitting in the sun can get old a lot faster than we might think...
When the benefits of volunteering are listed rarely do we hear that volunteering can help you have a happier and healthier retirement, but it can!
Consider the senior who retires from a career that has been the focus of their existence for decades. They have so much of themselves invested in that profession that they not only leave a job, they leave a large part of what defines them as a human being. Fishing, travelling, or sitting in the sun can get old a lot faster than we might think. When the glow wears off of being ‘retired’ what will motivate you to get up in the morning? Do you have outside interests, networks of friends who share those interests, do you have any challenges?
Retirement is a huge step. Whether it is a step ‘away from’ or ‘towards’ fulfillment is up to the individual. Many people put off volunteering until after they retire, not realizing that they can make the transition to volunteering much easier by starting early. Starting earlier lets you discover what kind of volunteering you like to do, it allows you to make connections and even start attending personal development workshops and seminars that agencies who rely on volunteers often offer, sometimes for free.
Just as you’d research and investigate any big step in your life, researching and investigating volunteering can ensure that once you are retired and have decided you’d like to commit some time to volunteering, that you know the ropes, know the people, know the opportunities, know your rights as a volunteer, and most of all, know what kind of volunteering is fulfilling for you.
Don’t wait! CASI is dedicated to helping seniors live comfortably in their own homes for as long as they wish and we have some very enjoyable volunteer opportunities available, even if all you can spare is an hour a week!
CASI stands for Community Action for Seniors’ Independence and although the seniors that we ‘officially’ help are 65 year of age or older, we also help our ‘young’ seniors by offering them enjoyable, fulfilling volunteer opportunities that fit their schedules and interests, which assists them in developing those networks and interests that are so beneficial to us when we step into the world of full time ‘retirement’.
